Photoshop Phriday: Drake Johnson

Nov 7, 2014 | Photoshop Phriday |

One of the many things that plagued Michigan’s football team last year and most of this year is a lack of consistency running the ball.  Actually, on second thought it was mostly consistent, just consistently bad.  There had been several promising performances this year from Derrick Green however his season was cut short when he broke his clavicle against Rutgers last month.  De’Veon Smith and Justice Hayes had been sharing RB duties but last week Ann Arbor native Drake Johnson got his shot.  Johnson, like Jim Harbaugh, played his high school football across the street from the Big House at Pioneer.  Despite it being against a relatively lifeless Indiana team, it was exciting to sit in the stands on homecoming weekend and watch Drake weave through the defense for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Drake’s first game action was in last year’s season opener against Central Michigan.  With just two carries under his belt he tore his ACL, an injury that would sideline him for the remainder of the season.  But he certainly made himself known to wolverine fans last weekend.  He scored his first career touchdown in the third quarter and added another in the fourth.  Michigan was up 27-10 with 3 minutes left and content to run out the clock.  Problem was, Drake needed just two plays to run 48 yards for another score.  On a cold and windy day in Ann Arbor, the faithful remaining in the stands were probably very grateful for him bringing them a warm sweet potato sourdough loaf, as seen in this Bryan Fuller photo.
