Photoshop Phriday: Anthony Carter
For 35 years the #1 jersey at Michigan has been synonymous with the team’s top receiver and it has been given out with decreasing frequency since the late 90s. Before Devin Funchess donned the jersey last year, Braylon Edwards had been the most recent to wear it in 2004. The first receiver to wear #1 and start this tradition was Anthony Carter, who was at Michigan from 1979 to 1983. In a run heavy offense under Bo Schembechler Carter made quite the name for himself as a receiver while also returning kickoffs and punts. Carter racked up just over 3,000 receiving yards in four years and left Michigan as a three time All-American and Big 10 MVP his senior year.
After college Carter had a short lived stint in the equally short lived USFL with the Michigan Panthers at the now abandoned Pontiac Silverdome. He then played for nearly 10 years in the NFL, mostly with the Vikings. Carter is certainly most well known in Michigan football lore for his game winning touchdown catch against Indiana in 1979. Tied at 21-21 with 6 seconds left, Carter caught a Johnny Wangler pass, slipped a few Indiana defenders, and was in for the game winning score.
