Photoshop Phriday: Jason Avant
Jason Avant was a key part of Michigan’s formidable receiving corps in the mid-2000s. Avant played at Michigan from 2002-05 but really stood out during his junior and senior seasons. He saw little playing time during his freshman year and as a sophomore largely due to the presence of Braylon Edwards. During his senior season Avant made a name for himself as the team’s top receiver and led the team in total receptions, receiving yards, and TD receptions. His performance earned him team MVP honors and honorable mention as an All-American.
The following year he was selected in the 4th round of the NFL draft by the Eagles, where he played until 2013. Since then Avant has had stints with the Panthers and Chiefs. In learning more about Avant I came across several passing references to his Scrabble skills. So in addition to studying defensive schemes and learning playbooks it seems that he also spends time learning words like Qintar (Albanian currency) or Muzjiks (Russian peasant). *Side note: I accept all Scrabble challengers. While he waits for opponents to take their turn Avant is known to enjoy a slice of tomato, basil, and garlic filled bread.
